Commuter raises question about Macy's Heating Vent hurting trees.

I am a daily commuter to WP from NYC and I walk along Main Street from the MNR station to my office. Last week I noticed that Macy's has installed a temporary/auxiliary HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) system on the north side of the street. The City has apparently issued Macy's a permit to place this HVAC system directly beneath two sidewalk trees. In the week or two since it has been blowing air and belching smoke, I have noticed at ~30% drop in the number of leaves on the trees.

This clearly can't be good for them. I would hate to seethose trees dead come next summer. What can we do? (The police assured me that Macy's has a proper permit for the HVAC).
