Westchester County plans to purchase the historic Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown and preserve it as open space and an environmental center.

Special to WPCNR from the Westchester County Executive Office of Communications

CityLine: July 12, 2001

Under County Executive Andy Spano’s proposal - which still has to be approved by county legislators - the county would pay $2.8 million for a 178-acre former dairy farm with its splendid vistas, pastures and woodlands. Most of the property would be kept as open space, with an almost 50-acre parcel on the west side of Hanover Street turned into an environmental education center, possibly in cooperation with agriculture or horticulture groups.

The county would preserve most of the existing buildings, which include a 4,000-square-foot main residence, a manager’s house, a caretaker’s house and a dairy barn.

The acquisition would be part of a $25 million open space program that has already led to the preservation of more than 2,300 acres in Westchester.
