WPCNR COUNTY CLARION-LEDGER By ehezi of Yonkers Tribune November 18, 4:45 PM:The cold stupor which has mesmerized all who have become aware of the tragic demise of one of its sons, one David Meyers, may have been prodded into a warmer place this afternoon. The call from Susan Tolchin on behalf of County Executive Andy Spano, Larry Schwartz, and herself accomplished much in adding an additional brush stroke of compassion onto the tragedy that Westchester County still grieves over.
Ms. Tolchin said, “When I first heard of the death of David last week, I was horrified. I was pained over the loss of a man whom I liked. I was very upset. He was a wonderful employee.” All the people on the 9th floor of the County Office came to love him and only wished him well.
“Despite being close to him, we didn’t know he was suffering from deep depression,” Ms. Tolchin added.
Advising Ms. Tolchin that it is difficult to understand the silence of County Executive Andy Spano’s not mentioning the emotional impact attending David Meyers’ funeral had on him, she said that know one in media asked him and that I should query media as to why the subject was not brought up.
When advised that corroborating sources advised that The Journal News was told to stay away from the story and that Cable News 12 decided against asking the County Executive’s about the loss of a “beloved” former employee, Ms. Tolchin requested that Yonkers Tribune report the sources.
Ms. Tolchin was advised that YT’s and WPCNR’s sources could not be divulged, as many were afraid for their future employment and also for retribution by the County. Yonkers Tribune advised that approximately 30 individuals were involved in the corroboration of the events that led to David Meyers’ suicide.
Ms. Tolchin added that she was happy for David when he decided to take a position in Maryland, or around there, with Fannie Mae, despite knowing that the County would lose a productive and likeable young man.
Ms. Tolchin choked back her emotions when hearing David’s mother’s reading of the suicide note he left behind at the funeral services she attended with with County Executive Andy Spano and Larry Schwartz.
Ms. Tolchin took solace in noting that David’s wife Kim said, “If you know of someone suffering from depression, get him or her help.”
“David’s death is a loss to everyone. We loved him.” added Ms. Tolchin.
When Yonkers Tribune advised Ms. Tolchin that our sources had advised that when David Meyers approached Larry Schwartz for a position he was admonished by Mr. Schwartz and advised that, “Your all washed up in Westchester County. You’ll never get a job here.” Ms. Tolchin broke in to say that I was in error, that Larry would never say such a thing, Larry was David’s best friend.”
