WHITE PLAINS EVENING CITY STAR REPORTER. by ehezi of Yonkers Tribune and John F. Bailey White Plains CitizeNetReporter. November 15, 2002 UPDATED NEW DISCLOSURES 11:04 PM EST, Photo added: David Meyers killed himself last weekend on November 11, Veterans Day because he felt distraught over his friend and mentor, Jay Hashmall being fired by the County Executive about one year ago.
In a confirmation, received Friday, WPCNR has learned that Meyers was indeed in need of a job on Election Night when he socialized with the WPCNR contact who talked with us Thursday about Meyers' Election Night conversations they had had with Mr. Meyers.
Subsequently, after Election Night, Meyers, the former Assistant to the County Executive Andy Spano, appears to have committed suicide 24 to 48 hours after being turned down for a job by Larry Schwartz, Andy Spano's Executive Officer, Saturday November 9, WPCNR and The Yonkers Tribune have learned from a source close to the Meyers family.
THE NEW YORK TIMES OBITUARY FOR MR. MEYERS PUBLISHED FRIDAY MORNING, LAMENTS: "He lit the candle to banish the darkness." Mr. Meyers' funeral was held Thursday morning. The peaceful, somber scene at 9:30 A.M. on Amsterdam Avenue, Thursday, at Riverside Memorial Chapel. Soon approximately 600 people informed by "word of mouth," arrived to pay their respects. The source interviewed by Mr. Hezi Friday afternoon, said he was told of this meeting with Schwartz by David Meyers personally by telephone, but had no inkling Mr. Meyers would react by committing suicide.
"Never Got Over It."
“He never got over it (the dismissal of Hashmall),” this source told e hezi of The Yonkers Tribune in an exclusive interview. Mr. Hezi said the source he interviewed had attended yesterday’s massive outpouring of grief by over 500 persons (not 300 as previously reported.) WPCNR was unaware there was a separate chapel opened to the hundreds of mourners to watch on closed circuit TV).
Moved to speak out after Thursday's emotional ceremony, the source said Mr. Meyers told him personally he had met with Larry Schwartz, County Executive Spano’s Executive Officer, on Saturday of last weekend, just prior to when he committed suicide, and had asked Mr. Schwartz for a job with the County.
Orchestrated by Meyers After Rejection.
Speaking in a rush of words in a personal telephone interview with Mr. Hezi, confirmed by caller i.d., the source spoke from the heart, saying that the suicide was “well-orchestrated by David,” and his family was instructed after his death as to what Mr. Meyers wanted done. (How Meyers did this is not determined).
Meyers planned it out, telling what he wanted.
Our source said that Mr. Meyers' brother, was to speak about the fact that Jay Hashmall’s firing was the direct reason for his suicide. They said his mother was supposed to read his suicide note, which she did, bravely, being supported by her family as she did so.
It was a courageous heartbreaking effort, to the sounds of gasps, pain, and shock throughout the starry-ceilinged chapel.
What WPCNR heard at the service was that Mr. Meyers resigned from the Assistant to the County Executive position because he was very upset that Mr. Hashmall had been dismissed.
Earlier report of job denial confirmed by today's interview.
WPCNR had learned from another source, a respected attorney with reputation for honesty and dedication to what is right, who characterized the conversation Mr. Meyers had with Mr. Schwartz Saturday as one that was not pleasant.
In the interview, our source alleges, Mr. Schwartz informed Meyers he would not work for the Democratic party again, due to the fact he had been “disloyal” to the County Executive’s and Schwartz’ wishes that he not work on the Tony Castro campaign against Jeanine Pirro.
However, this is unconfirmed. Only Mr. Schwartz can tell us what he told David Meyers last Saturday. The time and place of that meeting was not disclosed by our source.
Mr. Meyers was not employed when he went to Schwartz.
WPCNR has been told that Mr. Meyers’ job with Fannie Mae (possibly the Fannie Mae Corporation, and not Fannie Mae Foundation, as previously reported, which Fannie Mae is not clear) had not worked out for some reason, and that he did not have a position, and that has now been confirmed.
In information received today the person who talked with Meyers Election Night at Bramson headquarters told WPCNR :
"He was looking for a job...he had worked nearly full-time for Noam (Bramson) in the campaign. But he wasn't any more specific than that. I assumed when we would've met for coffee all of that would've been discussed. But he didn't ask me for help per se...it was just a passing comment."
Pirro, Spano behavior of 2002 being investigated?
The Yonkers Tribune learned today from an official making quiet inquiries on possibility of a federal investigation affecting them, that, “There was an inquiry from an official office inquiring about the past within the last two weeks.”
(Meaning, WPCNR interprets, the Hashmall No Bid Contract round of subpoenas supposedly issued last fall by Mrs. Pirro’s office in relation to a reported convened Grand Jury. WPCNR reports “supposedly,” because WPCNR has learned that Mr. Meyers, whom we reported as having been subpoenaed was not actually served with an individual subpoena as indicated on December 7, 2002, in The Journal News.
A person close to that story that appeared in December of last year, confirmed to WPCNR they had seen the subpoenas but had never been able to confirm the existence of a newly convened Grand Jury. Mr. Hezi reports his subject said Meyers was only named in a subpoena.
In a last comment about the possibility of an outside investigation, the exploratory source figure said the investigation inquiry did not come from the Westchester District Attorney's office.
First to speak out.
The person close to the family, interviewed by Mr. Hezi for WPCNR, said bitterly, that the faces in the pews around them at Riverside Memorial Chapel turned white when they saw Andy Spano, who arrived on time and then Larry Schwartz, ten minutes late, come into the service.
The source in a somber voice said they blamed the County Executive Office conduct in handling Mr. Myers over the last week as contributing to his decision to commit suicide:
“Andy Spano. Larry Schwartz. Susan Tolchin, and Jeanine Pirro. They throw their weight around without a care in the world and now they’ve killed David."
The New York Times publishes Mr. Meyers’ obituary Friday morning.
WPCNR has confirmed that The New York Times published an obituary today recognizing Mr. Meyers’ death 4 days after it occurred. The Journal News still has not published an obituary notice. WPCNR expects they will publish it on Saturday, now that The New York Times has taken the lead, almost 24 hours after the funeral took place.
Was Journal News silenced?
WPCNR has learned from a member of the Democratic party on the staff of an Assemblyperson, that perhaps the Journal News suppressed the story, because our source from this Assembly-connected individual told WPCNR that “they were told point blank, not to do the story.” WPCNR asked who told them this. The source asked, “who do you think?”
Alpert, Former Dem Head, Owner of Riverside Chapel contacted.
David Alpert, former Chair of the Westchester Democratic Party, told WPCNR that he felt it was inappropriate to disclose arrangements with the family, or whether or not the Riverside Memorial Chapel was contributing the funeral services. He said he did not know whether or not the Democratic Party would contribute to the cost of the funeral.
Mr. Alpert said he was out of town in Washington on business the last two days and therefore had no idea why the venue for the Meyers services had originally been reported as being Oelker & Cox in Mount Kisco, which simply might have been an error on inquirers' parts. WPCNR had been told by Sinatra Funeral Homes Answering Service that the Meyers services were going to be at Oelker & Cox, then later Sinatra Funeral Homes said there was no Meyers listed.
Times Obituary Notes
The obituary for Mr. Meyers in The New York Times concludes with the following tribute to David Meyers, calling him
Lifelong believer in the inherent goodness of mankind, David's tireless efforts and political and social commitments reflected in his desire to improve the lives of those less fortunate. He remains an inspiration to all those whose lives he touched. He lit the candle to banish the darkness."
Note: This story is (c) 2002, White Plains CitizeNetReporter and The Yonkers Tribune, and may not be reproduced, retransmitted, or copied in any form without express written consent.
In previous stories about Mr. Meyers, WPCNR reported a previous erroneous spelling of his name, and apologizes for the error.
