It is a pleasure to see a paper that reports the news instead of making the news. -- William Waterman, Jr. former White Plains Councilman - The Councilman in Exile

W.A.V.E. Whacks Media for Pro-Incumbent Endorsements in School Board Elections

WPCNR VOX POPULI. By Steven Rabinowitz. June 17, 2002: Steven Rabinowitz, head of the White Plains Alliance for Vision in Education comments on the latest White Plains School Board Elections, criticising media endorsement of incumbents as a matter of habit, without considering the issues. W.A.V.E.'s candidates, Maria Valentin and William Pollak defeated incumbents Larry Geiger and Steve Sules.
Mr. Rabinowitz shares a letter with us, recently published in the Journal News in which he takes their editorial board to task.
You might start with rethinking your blanket endorsements of incumbents in school board elections. In 2002 across the board you supported incumbents who ran for reelection in contested races. Diversity and real community participation in school governance will not be achieved by maintaining the status quo in all cases.
Further, such a policy shows a clear disconnect between your paperšs
editorial staff and the feelings of the community. Case in point is White
Plains, where you endorsed two incumbents who were both defeated (one of which was chosen by only a quarter of the voters), something which has never happened before here.
One of the candidates you did not endorse came in first in a field of 5 having been picked by over 55% of the voters. The fact that this highly qualified newly elected school board member happens to be Hispanic, and the first Hispanic elected in a district with 35% Hispanic students, seems to have had no impact on your erroneous decision.
Your paperšs failure to report in any substantial way on this important change calls into question your commitment to diversity and to school boards that truly represent the wishes and concerns of the communities which elect them.
Time to wake up and smell the ballots.
