WPCNR MR. & MRS. & MS. WHITE PLAINS VOICE. August 20, 2006: Mayor Alfred Del Vecchio (1976-1993) clarifies in no uncertain terms his criticism of the Pinnacle affordable housing project lies with the means, not the ends:
John,
WP Citizen has changed the issue. Affordable Housing is NOT the issue. I accept the subsidization of affordable housing by the taxpayer as a necessary responsibility of government. I DO NOT accept phoney politicians saying that the Urban Renewal/IDA bonding will give the city one million dollars profit with no added expenses. That is simply not true, but the news coming out of city hall is that this "initiative" is a "miracle" born out of the genius of our Administration. I'm allergic to that kind of animal waste.
This government has taken a very solvent city and reduced it to a state where we have to skimp and scrounge to maintain our infrastructure, deliver essential services, and fund programs to benefit the average citizen. In exchange we have luxury high rise condominiums with a view of Long Island Sound that contribute nothing to the quality of life of the people who live in affordable housing. Therefore, I can neither understand or make any sense out of WP Citizen's reply.
