WPCNR MR. & MRS. & MS. WHITE PLAINS VOICE. July 12, 2006: A reader supports Alexis Greer's ability and right to serve, now being considered by the Common Council:
Dear John,
This note is in response to the letter posted (from Dan Seidel).
It is not at all uncommon in the United States for family members of elected officials who die in office to succeed their loved ones. Why? Because these family members are those who are best positioned to carry out the plans that the individual originally elected to that office had in mind. Of course, there are cases where said family members are not qualified to take up the mantle. But it is deeply offensive to Ms. Greer and all those whose lives have been touched by her and by her father for Dan Seidel to suggest that she is unqualified.
What, in his mind, are the qualifications necessary for City Council? Because Ms. Greer stacks up pretty well--she has an intimate knowledge of the details of local politics both from working closely with her father and from growing up in the city, a degree from a prestigious college, excellent speaking and writing skills, and a deep sense of social justice.
White Plains residents should be proud that Ms. Greer is willing to serve the city during her time of grief, just as her father would be.
