WPCNR MR. & MRS. & MS. WHITE PLAINS VOICE. February 18, 2006: A reader who follows the foggy financials of White Plains, writes about Albany's Paralysis on the inexorable creep of the tax certioraris (refunds resulting in lowered assessments) on not only White Plains but other state towns and cities as well:
John
We must continue to remind ourselves that Tax Certs are causing serious financial problems in White Plains -- shifting the burden of real estate taxes away from commercial properties and pushing the burden onto homeowners.
This begs the question -- "What are our NY State representatives doing to mitigate the negative financial impact of Tax Certs." Alter all, don't they make tax law?
Residents of White Plains are represented, depending on where you live in White Plains, by State Assemblypersons Adam Bradley and Amy Paulin, and by State Senator Suzi Oppenheimer.
While it is admirable that you report on Assemblyman Bradley from time to time, what is he saying about the Tax Certs? Why aren't there any reports on, or from our other representatives -- Assemblywomen Paulin and Senator Oppenheimer?
Most importantly, what are the body of State Senators and State Assemblypersons in NY State -- whether they represent White Plains or homeowners elsewhere in NY State -- collectively doing about the Tax Certs which are:
"Killing" the commercial real estate tax base of both the City of White Plains and the White Plains School System
and
"Killing" the commercial real estate tax bases in other cities and towns.
Indeed, isn't it time for "Albany" to address homeowners' suffering due to unfair commercial Tax Certs and the unfair method being used for assessing commercial properties solely on income-producing criteria?
Sincerely,
John Carlson
