WPCNR MR. & MRS. & MS. WHITE PLAINS VOICE. January 25, 2006: A reader comments on "The Ruff Report" presented by Geoffrey Ruff, a nightly guest at 85 Court Street, the County Drop In Shelter in White Plains:
January 25, 2005
Mr. Bailey, after reading your posting of Mr. Geoffrey Ruff’s story (explanation) as a 7 or 8 year recipient of the homeless drop off system advocating change in the process, standards and protocol who utilize the homeless “Drop-In-Center, I’m finally pleased that some journalist (you John) has taken an interest in posting some facts directly from the reality of a homeless individuals frustrations. Given Mr. Ruff the opportunity to advocate for himself on the issue of homelessness.

In a recent commentary to you on the “HARDCORE” homeless relocation issues, I asked, “ Where are all the homeless coalitions and human rights advocates” and why are they keeping silent on the issues of relocation of the hardcore homeless in WP.
Apparently the political storm winds in the sails of the homeless sinking ship has finally anchored, the political claim to fame media blitz has dwindled down, personal power ego’s have moved on to other forms of citizen entertainment, and what the homeless issues are left with is the reality of the issues of the homeless, finally!
The homeless ship rests in its temporary harbor.
For the first time publicly we’re not hearing those disgusting derogatory selected adjectives “Hardcore Homeless”, I’m sure Mr. Ruff appreciates NOT being treated like a second class citizen and be branded as a potential violent criminal!
Progress can finally be made when you sit down at the table collectively with respectable etiquette address the important issues with professional resources and agencies and remove the political agendas involved. Exactly what should have happened from the very start. Rather then a frenzy of political football and citizen fear created by mainstream political media to relocate the homeless immediately; Void of any thoughtful constructive preparation and planning.
I compliment the White Plains Legal Services for their efforts in assisting Mr. Ruff with his concerns brought forth to the Commissioner of Social Services in a positive constructive atmosphere. I also compliment Mr. Mann and Mr. Wilkins for their constructive participation moving forward for change and improvement with the homeless issues in White Plains.
Perhaps moving forward the less fortunate now can be treated with dignity and respect. Hopefully, collectively with open minds and understanding we will be able to look back on this issue and say we as citizens in White Plains and Westchester County residents had a positive impact assisting the disadvantaged, made a beneficial difference in their lives and learned a lesson that all homeless individuals are not hardcore criminals.
Progress can be made if we focus on the good, and not the bad an ugly!
