WPCNR MR. & MRS. & MS. WHITE PLAINS VOICE. November 14, 2005: In response to a Democrat's relflections, this reader writes:
Mr. Bailey, in reading your posting on a “Democrat Reflects.” Mr. Ghassan Karam seems not to reflect but is seeking an explanation, a justification as a Democrat why Mayor Delfino for the third time in a row wins a landslide victory, again! As one “has-been” Democrat to another, it’s about the best choice, not the lesser of the best evils.
So lets reflect with some reality facts, inexcusable reality facts that lead up the to voters choice for three consecutive terms of Mayor Delfino in the drivers seat and the demise of the Power campaign.
Realty check one: Our local elections absolutely have nothing to do with voters party choice, wake up campaign strategists. Ignorant voters we are not. Realty check two: Mayor Joe Delfino is respected and loved by the majority of voting citizens that unequivocally believe in the direction he is taking our city. That is known as a vision.
Realty check three: Yes, Mr. Power was the “sacrificial lamb” he entered the race quite late, why? Insiders know every possible choice candidate declined the offer to run against Mayor Joe Delfino. Even respected County Legislator Mr. Bill Ryan made a prudent wise decision not to enter the race. Insightful, intuitive thinking.
Realty check four: The check I’m most disgustingly displeased with as well as others, the Power camp ran an unprecedented inexcusable, ugly, unfair attack not only against the Mayor but against the Republican Party, spear headed on the steps of City Hall by former Mayors Del Vecchio and Schulman. The results of that strategy are obvious, defeat. Many saw it coming, blinded I am not.
Realty check five: The Power camp completely out of touch with the voting public and our interest as opposed to the interest of the small majority of the misguided Power camp interests. It clearly was not about hating what the Mayor has done, it was about hating the Mayor, period! Were five or six other Democratic votes hated on the Common Council, were their names mentioned by the party, “look what they did to our city” of course not. Why not is my question? Why, I believe the Common Council is proud of their hard work and our city. I am, be proud stand by your thinking and decisions.
Realty check six: This represents many voters and myself, we didn’t cross the party vote, we simply didn’t buy into the misguided package of the Power camp failed strategy. I saw through it as well as many others, the voting numbers once again confirmed it. The difference is I’m willing to discuss it, expose it, but not willing to accept the disappointing embarrassment of it. I support integrity and stand by it.
Realty check seven: The voting numbers, Joe Delfino – 7,236 60% Dennis Power 4,940 – 40% - Rita Malmud – 7,486 – Glen Hockley 6,926 Glen Hockley 1,161 votes over Larry Delgado, how did that happen. And why does Rita Malmud and Tom Roach receive the Independent Party vote and Glen Hockley not. Mr. Hockley the underdog comes out a winner, interesting, reason for it. It’s called, a good campaign strategy, understanding the voters, a positive sound message, hard work, and the truth! A lesson to be learned here.
Perhaps Rita Malmud should have been the candidate of choice to run, observe the numbers. Ms. Malmud – 7,486 – Mayor Delfino – 7,236.
White Plains might have had another entertaining voting debacle all the way through 2007. I would keep my vision on the next mayoral election that is the only election where the changing of the guard has the only possibility. The question is what does Mr. & Mrs. White Plains settle for then.
Possibly an unknown, a non-party candidate, an independent person, now that would be a vision!
There you have it Mr. & Mrs. White Plains, we made the choices, we live by them, we are proud of them, or not.
