WPCNR MR. & MRS. & MS. WHITE PLAINS VOICE. November 9, 2005: Reaction to Mayor Joseph Delfino's thumping of Dennis Power in Tuesday's Mayoral Election is beginning to come in to WPCNR. One reader says, 58%-42% is not a mandate.
Mr. Bailey,
Before I call your site on a little overstretching of your election result
coverage for the mayoral campaign, due congratulations are in order for
Mayor Delfino on his victory. He should know we'll be watching closely for
his promise of "Moving Forward Together."
But Mr. Bailey, to say that a 60/40 victory was a clear-cut MANDATE? A
"resounding well done?"
Silly you.
Perhaps in all the celebration you're just printing words straight from the
George Bush spin machine?
Delfino was up against a virtual unknown in Dennis Power, who had 1/4 of the
Mayor's war chest, a totally grassroots campaign and very lean support.
Yet, a full 40% of the White Plains voters said "No" to Joseph Delfino.
"Mandate?"
Sure, there are no points for second place. But please-- if you want people
to take your reporting seriously, call a spade a spade. A 60/40 win is
something the mayor should be thankful for-- but it's not such a whopping
victory considering the size of the Power campaign.
I salute Dennis Power and the ability to pull off what he did with such few
resources. Mayor Delfino should know that listening to people, as Mr. Power
so earnestly did, can be a useful thing for a leader.
And, we'll make sure he learns what Dennis Power still got thousands of
people to say with the voting lever: Residents come first.
We'll all be at City Hall to make sure of that for months to come.
