WPNCR MR. & MRS. & MS. WHITE PLAINS VOICE. October 19, 2005: A reader is chocked at a political billboard placed overlooking Renaissance Plaza Fountain:
After many years of environmental decay of our downtown business district and
the old deteriorating fountain, White Plains citizens finally have a beautiful
Renaissance Plaza Fountain to admire. A public open space of beauty and
eloquence created for our pleasure, relaxation and aesthetic enjoyment of the
city, a citizen’s sanctuary to escape the world around. Now the citizens of
White Plains are being subjected to the aesthetic declining beauty of the
fountain by the distasteful political display of candidacy graffiti being shoved
into our faces in our public open spaces. (More)
Today I was appalled to see Republican County Clerk candidate Linda Doherty’s
political billboard plastered against the wall of Renaissance Plaza. Personally,
just an annoying visual disrespect for the eloquence and beauty of our open
public spaces in White Plains. The first of a kind ever to appear at Renaissance
Plaza, hopefully the last.
As an Independent Voter and a strong advocate of our Constitutional Rights,
freedom of speech, freedom of enterprise and the personal use of private
property, political candidates have an ethical responsibility to the public. Ms
Doherty’s billboard violates that respected responsibility. Ms. Doherty once had
my vote; she has since lost it and will only regain it upon removal of any and
all political advertising in public spaces.
