WPCNR MR. & MRS. & MS. WHITE PLAINS VOICE. September 12, 2005: A White Plains Rotarian, Dr. Evan Delman e-mailed this report to a WPCNR reader Thursday morning September 8 about his experiences in aiding the relief effort. The Report:
I am just outside New Orleans, Louisiana now and have been in various locations down here for over a week. Things here are bad..... very bad. Much worse than I have seen before.
Several towns have been wiped from the map. Not just the buildings, but what was once land is now part of the Gulf. The power of this storm twisted railroad tracks and even concrete was pulled apart from the rebar inside itself.
The suffering of the citizens is beyond compare. We have come across people that have not had food or water since the night before the storm, some eight days ago. Many have already perished due to dehydration and/or starvation. The temperature reached 105 today with high humidity, slowing everything and everyone to a crawl.
Our ability to help is hindered by the still flooded streets. Gunfire has become commonplace as people begin doing whatever is needed to survive.
I do not know when I will return to WP, so please say hello to the group for me.
