An Editor Remembers Peter Jennings, ABC News Posted on Monday, August 08 @ 14:52:54 EDT by jfbailey

Toast of the Town! WPCNR MR. & MRS. & MS. WHITE PLAINS VOICE. June 8, 2005:  Peter Katz, long-time White Plains resident and community leader, at one time worked with ABC News anchorman Peter Jennings, who died yesterday after a battle with lung cancer. WPCNR asked Katz for a brief remembrance.

"One striking thing I noted about Peter was that, unlike some others in network television and radio, he did not allow his 'star' status to stand in the way of rolling up his sleeves and getting down in the trenches to cover the news. He left his ego behind when the elevator door opened onto the newsroom, which then was on West 66th Street in Manhattan. For a time, we worked face-to-face on a daily basis across the editor's desk. In going over copy and the story line-up I had prepared for a newscast, Peter always wanted to know more than was in the script. To put it simply, he wanted to be sure he knew what he was talking about. We often would discuss the implications of legislation winding its way through Congress, or subtleties of the political process, or whether an on-going debate at the United Nations would ever lead to solving a global problem. He never hesitated to make changes at the last minute if doing so would make a story more understandable and meaningful to the audience. I believe that, for Peter Jennings, being a journalist was far more important than being a 'star'."
