To the Editor:
I find it disturbing that the very first choice in the CNR's current multiple choice survey about "what White Plains really needs" is the suggestion that two homeless shelters on Post Road be closed down. Surely all of us can come up with ideas to improve the City without scapegoating on those least able to defend themselves.
I sit on the advisory board of the Coachman shelter, a 100-family facility which houses some 300 people, mostly children. The building is neat and clean, and the adjoining playground is well-maintained. The building sits unobtrusively in a predominantly commercial area, quite close to many buildings that house the Westchester County governmental offices with which these homeless families are interacting in getting back on their feet. Both shelters are within walking distance of the Galleria and the City Center, where there are frequent job openings, both for adults and for teen-agers.
Where should such a shelter be located, if not here?
